The Story

A spirit dwells alone in an empty house in Manila. We enter her life of solitude as she moves through rooms in the house. One day, an American couple arrives unannounced. The ghost tries to keep them out, but they find a way in, and she vanishes. Jesse and Ellie’s attempts to settle-in are halted by strange inconveniences. At night, Jesse reassures his wife. “God has a plan for us here.” All the while the ghost’s silence keeps us guessing— is she a nice ghost?

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

I am nearing the age my parents were when they moved our family from Iowa to the Philippines as missionaries in 2005. The day we moved in, a mango branch collapsed on our front gate and the plumbing was shot. Soon after, I became plagued by nightmares and my sister and father began seeing the ghost of a woman in a white dress around the house. While my parent’s livelihood projects in the slums provided them a sense of purpose, the ghost continued to bewilder them. When I look back, I can still see us waning under the hidden history of our new home.
